History
The beginnings of the Bytom parish cemetery date back to the 17th century. Thanks to industry, in the second half of the nineteenth century, the city grew rapidly. Around 1800, apart from the parish church, there was a church near the Franciscan monastery. In the cemetery, which was just outside the city walls, there was a shortage of space. Efforts to create a new parish and build a church have begun. The area on which the cemetery was to extend (between today's Kraszewskiego and Piekarska streets) was designated and the purchase of plots began. In 1866, the land for the cemetery was sacrificed. Eventually, two cemeteries were created: in 1868 Mater Dolorosa I at ul. Piekarska 71 and in 1886 Mater Dolorosa II at ul. Piekarska 75. The cemetery "Mater Dolorosa" boasts a neo-gothic cemetery chapel from 1882, designed by the Viennese architect Hugo Heer. The Mater Dolorosa cemetery is the most important necropolis of Bytom, both from the historical and historic side. In addition to the cemetery, which was inscribed on the list of monuments, also entered individual tombs, cemetery chapels with very high architectural values. Graveyard avenue can boast of old trees. Even the fence of the cemetery is valuable. The administrator of the cemetery is the parish dedicated to the Holy Trinity. [source: Wikipedia, 543421]
