History and description

The cemetery was probably decorated in the 1840s. for the needs of the Uniate parish in Werbkowice, during the general reconstruction of the village of Werbkowice and land cleaning. He replaced the tomb cemetery used from the end of the 17th century. In 1875, as a result of the liquidation of the Uniate diocese of Chełm, the parish of Werbkowice was renamed the Orthodox D. Kawałko, Cemeteries ..., pp. 284-285. . The church in Werbkowice was recovered for the benefit of the Roman Catholic Church in 1919, the Orthodox parish in the village was never restored. Nevertheless, the cemetery was used by the local Orthodox population until the end of the Second World War and displacement of the Orthodox Ukrainians; the last preserved tombstone is dated to 1940. In the following years he was abandoned and fell into disrepair . At the beginning of the 1990s, there were approximately 10 stone tombstones and a concrete cross from 1940 in the necropolis. All tombstones are damaged, preserved in fragments. Inscriptions on tombstones have been made in the Church Slavonic language. Linden and shrubs of elderberry and lilac lilac grow on the cemetery . In December 2015 and in March 2016, the cemetery was renovated by volunteers under the direction of the Society for Nature and Man . During the renovation, numerous tombstones excavated from the ground, including monuments in the places of the burial of the Roman Catholic spiritualist Roman Rogalski (died in 1856) and the Orthodox priest Mikhail Albin Zelechowski (died in 1891) .
