The Polish Legionaries' cemetery in Jastków was created just after the Battle of Jastkow between the Austrian armies, which included the First Brigade of Polish Legions and the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Polish Legions, and the withdrawing Russian troops. The main attack was carried out in the middle of the front, which was occupied by Polish troops. 108 Austrian soldiers and 128 legionaries died in the battle. Everyone was buried in the created war cemetery in Jastków. In 1924, a meeting of participants of the battle took place in Jastków, to which Józef Piłsudski also came. It was decided that on the 15th anniversary of the battle a monument will be built in the cemetery, and to honor the dead and participants of the battle, it was decided to build a public school in the vicinity of the cemetery. Even before the 15th anniversary of the Battle of Jastków, the remains of Austrian soldiers were transferred to the military cemetery in Garbow. From the military cemetery in Niedrzwica Kościelna, the body of 8 legionnaires buried there was transferred. The existing cemetery in Jastków was tidied up, a monument was built (visible in the picture), a fence and new concrete crosses were erected. On June 4, 1931, a great ceremony to unveil a new monument at the cemetery and give the local school a banner. President Ignacy Mościcki attended the ceremony, who also became the godfather of the new school. The next year, the bishop of Lublin, Marian Fulman, set up a parish in Jastków, inter alia, to take care of the legionary cemetery. During the battle of Jastków the greatest losses were suffered by the 4th Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Bolesław Roi - 70 killed and about 200 wounded. [source: Wikipedia, 1446672]
