History
Soldiers who died in the battle fought on November 19, 1914 were buried here. It was a period of defeats of the Austro-Russian army, which was displaced from the area by the Russian army. In Charzewice, soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army were surprised by the Russian army. There was a bayonet fight, after which the forestless hills over the Dunajec river were covered with hundreds of corpses of killed soldiers. They were buried by local people in makeshift collective graves. According to witnesses of these events: "they transported corpses on carts to collective graves like sheaves of grain" . In 1915, when the Austrians recovered this area after the victorious battle for Limanowa, the bodies of soldiers were exhumed and transferred to the war cemeteries built by the Austrians . 109 soldiers of the Austrian army and 52 soldiers of the Russian army were buried in the cemetery no. There are also Poles who were forced by the invaders to fight against each other, on both sides of the front . [source: Wikipedia, 3174270]
Description of the cemetery
This cemetery is considered to be the prettiest in the Brest region. The main decorative element of the cemetery is the stone obelisk in the upper part of the quarters, which has the shape of a pergola with a square cross-section, from which the stone pylon, about a dozen meters high, rises to the top. On the walls of its highest part there are four stone crosses. Pergola is supported by bricks made of stone, with large cast-iron crosses of two types between them (one-armed Latin and two-armed crosses), two plaques with date 1914 and inscriptions in German, which can be translated as : Earth, I've been faithful to Earth, you drank my blood, Earth, I died for you, Earth, now you cover me. Refrain from tears. No life is eternal except for the life of those who fell with honor for the Emperor and Homeland. The fence of the cemetery is made of concrete, stylized pillars, between which the chain is stretched. The part of the cemetery situated on the road has three gates. Behind the first wooden one there are graves with concrete tombstones topped with low cast iron crosses. Behind the second, cast-iron gate is an empty square, behind the third, also cast-iron main monument. Behind him there are two graves of officers framed with concrete cones. In the part of the cemetery located below the central road, the decorative element is a large concrete cross. The graves in this part of the cemetery have concrete steles crowned with concrete crosses . The tombs do not have name plates. In the forest next to the cemetery you can still recognize the remains of trenches . [source: Wikipedia, 3174270]
