The Old Cemetery - a non-existent necropolis in Koszalin, occupied an area of 7.51 ha in the area between today's streets: Tadeusza Kościuszki, Młyńska and Al. Monte Cassino. The history of the necropolis dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Koszalin was banned from making burials within the city limits. At that time, the city authorities bought land from the inhabitant named Westphal and decided to use it for the burial cemetery. In later years, the cemetery area was enlarged, and in 1819 it was dedicated and from that moment its use began. Many tombs were crowned with rich tombs and chapels, belonging to the wealthy Koszalin families. In 1856, the house of the cemetery caretaker was built, and in 1886 one of the larger chapels was rebuilt into a funeral home. The main entrance was from the present Młyńska Street and was decorated with a huge gate. The cemetery was closed for new burials in 1926, it was only possible to bury the dead in older family graves. After 1939, the bodies of German prisoners were buried there. In connection with the changes following the takeover of Koszalin by the Polish authorities, the cemetery was abandoned and gradually devastated. Burials of new residents were made only on the so-called New Cemetery. The Old Cemetery met a lot similar to other former necropolis in the 1960s - in the 1960s, the remaining tombstones were pulled down, the graves were chased away, and the greenery was rearranged, creating a park from the area of the cemetery. Tadeusz Kościuszko. Among the Koszalinians buried in the former cemetery were the graves of meritorious people for Koszalin, including: * Ernst August Braun - mayor of Koszalin (1816-1859), deputy to the National Assembly, secret government councilor. He was the longest-serving mayor in the city's history * Hannecke - professor of history, director of Roder gymnasium * Johann Vogel - manufacturer, owner of the soap factory, the longest operating factory in Koszalin * Henriette Hendel-Schütz - actress * Heinrich Ludwig Beitzke - geographer and historian. * Johann Ernst Benno - German writer. * Bertha von Massow - superior of the Salem convent, co-initiator of the construction of the hospital.
