History
The parish cemetery in Wola was founded on the so-called priest's wólce in 1854; from the very beginning it was intended for the local, usually poor population. The need to establish a new cemetery was created in connection with the annexation of the church of St. Wawrzyńca on the Orthodox Church and a device in the vicinity of the Orthodox cemetery. The cemetery was enlarged many times: in 1874 Mórawski gives this date as the date of the cemetery's establishment then in 1882 (by 3.36 ha) and in 1899 (by 2.61 ha). In 1918, at the initiative of the Friends of Wola Society, a monument commemorating the fallen in the First World War was erected at the cemetery. In the years 1925-1937 its area was 9.1 ha. There are also Warsaw Defenders from 1939 and ordinary inhabitants of the city murdered by the Germans at the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944 (about 50,000 people). There are also graves of insurgents and soldiers of the Polish People's Army who died during the liberation of Warsaw. The area of the cemetery is currently (2018) 12 ha. Monument to the fallen in World War I was renovated in 1969. The church is located in the cemetery. Grzegorz Wielkiego, built in 1962-1963. Next to the necropolis, behind the wall, there is the Warsaw Uprising Cemetery. [source: Wikipedia, 335199]
