History
The new cemetery was founded in 1897, when the area for new burials began to be missing in the Old Cemetery. At the turn of the century, a neo-Gothic chapel was built on the plan of the Greek cross. Due to the peripheral location in the first years, the residents negatively related to burying relatives in the new cemetery. Despite this state of affairs, the city authorities invested in a new necropolis, the area of which was enlarged. Around 1920, a monumental gate was built, hedges and shrubs were planted, and drainage works were carried out to dry the marshy ground. Eight wells were drilled, and in the central part a water hole was dug, which after admitting goldfish into it caused widespread indignation of the city's inhabitants. The importance of the cemetery grew after 1926, when the Old Cemetery was closed for new burials. After the takeover of Koszalin by the Polish authorities in 1945, things were done at that time, the area of the entire cemetery was plundered, removing all tombstones. Only greenery survived and planted in the 1920s. No monument was left in its place, and after storage many of them were used to harden roads and build walls and benches in the city. In 1945, a part of the cemetery at the entrance was designated for the burials of fallen soldiers of the Red Army. The place of rest was also found there by the fallen who were exhumed from the area surrounding the post office at Zwycięstwa Street. In 1966, the dead buried on the liquidated war cemetery, which was located on Piaskowa Street, were moved to the municipal cemetery. In the center of the warhouse, a monument of the Brotherhood of Arms was created in 1967, the designers were Melchior Zapolnik, Michał Kuśnierz, Romuald Grodzki and Ryszard Moroz. In 2003, a monument of Gratitude of the Soviet Army transferred from Victory Square was erected, which stood there from 1954. Its designers are Franciszek Duszeńko and Adam Haupt. To the south of the chapel is the Monument to Martyrdom, its creator is Zygmunt Wujek. In the 90s of the 20th century, the cemetery area was enlarged by the area lying behind the narrow-gauge railway tracks, but it became a phenomenon. Through the cemetery area run the tracks of Koszalin Narrow Gauge Railway, where transport is carried out (with a break in 2001-2008). During the reconstruction of the main artery of the city, Zwycięstwa Street, workers found tombstones or parts of them that were used to create urban infrastructure. The monuments recovered in this way were transported to the cemetery and a lapidary of grave sculpture was created from them. The ceremonial unveiling was made on May 23, 2002 on the day of the city's feast. [source: Wikipedia, 2068080]
