Oliwa Cemetery in Gdańsk - a historic municipal cemetery in the Oliwa district of Gdańsk, existing since 1832. It is located at ul. Opacka 8. It covers an area of 5 ha. It is the third largest cemetery in the city, after Łostowicki and Srebrzysko. [source: Wikipedia, 2374526]

History

The present cemetery was created by combining the previous four separate cemeteries: the first Catholic (founded in 1832, with the entrance from CzyĹźewskiego Street), the first Evangelical (founded in 1835), the Catholic second (founded in 1920, after filling the first Catholic cemetery) and the Protestant second ( founded in 1920, after filling the first Evangelical cemetery). In 1909 a cemetery chapel was built. Until 1945, Catholic cemeteries and Protestant cemeteries functioned as separate cemeteries. In 1945 they were taken over by the Catholic Church. In 1947 they were taken over by the City Council, which created one municipal cemetery. The monument is a cemetery, a chapel, a morgue (from the end of the 19th century) and a fence with four gates (leading to the previously existing four separate cemeteries).
